Mandai Zoo comics...my 2nd ePublication

Here's my second idea to present my photos more creatively...inspired very much by the idea of photos as a visual narrative from watching too much of NatGeo. Take a look, comment and enjoy!

A photo a week: Week 16

The raw spirit that this young boxer demonstrates, I thought, is simply wonderful. And what better way to pay homage to fighting in all its rawness forms, than to capture it in this simple photo.

A photo a week: Week 15

The graffiti motif captured in this photo is indeed a gentle reminder that there are talented artists in our midst. I thought the colourful nature of this motif is perhaps a gentle reminder to the varied make-up of our society here in Singapore.

A photo a week: Week 14

I seldom do night photography due to the exigencies of work, but when the right opportunity comes along, I could never give up on an opportunity to capture the local buildings, in all their lighting glory. Over here is the Singapore National Museum, captured during a particular Night Festival that coincides with the Festival of the Arts.

My first ePublication: 'interpretations'...now available

My maiden ePublication, a coffee-table photo ebook entitled 'interpretations' is now available. Download a sample copy below.

A photo a week: Week 13

I just love the contrast that the young shoot offers against the grey drab background. Shot at Labrador Park@Singapore, I do wonder whether such a scene is a reminder to us about how life challenges are no different than the state of this young shoot. With a steely determination to survive, its creeping stem manages to find its way between the crevices of the bricked surface, just allowing sufficiently, the final green leave to bud, in all its greenery glory. Perhaps this is an apt reminder of how much parents in genral have sacrificed their creature comforts, so that the generation after them could enjoy the fruits of their labour. Hmmm...

A photo a week: Week 12

The window display in this clothing store located at Sydney@Australia is too colourful to be missed. The richness in colours, and the plushness of the soft toys just add a certain depth and dimension to the picture. Plus the lighting helps too!

A photo a week: Week 11

When the time is right, I do love the occasional excitement that such joy rides have to offer, and this 'space jump' ride at Genting Highlands is no different. I guess it is a natural human tendency to want to be challenged, and to feel that occasional adrenaline rush. And i guess I am not much different in that department either.

A photo a week: Week 10

This young shot jutting out from the concrete crevices, I thought, should aptly capture the spirit that the youth of today should adopt. Green and young, but full of vigour and hungry for success, even in the dire of circumstances, i do hope that this picture  encapsulates what youth should mean to the young, and the not-so-young amongst us! That life is challenging...yes. But it shouldn't stop you from wriggling your way through those 'cracks' of life, and seize the opportunity when the time comes.

A photo a week: Week 9

Before the only railway station serving the northerly route ends her operations next year, I felt that it is apt for me to revisit the station for one last look. I could vividly remember the last and only time I was here, way back in the mid-80's, lugging my luggage, as my dad and myself made our way amongst the many people heading in the same direction. What I remembered most were the peddlers coming up on board the various carriages to sell their wares, mostly food, to the passengers, at each and every stop. And I could still recall how in one short experience I had then, somehow turned me off to the idea of eating a corn-on-the-cob. Only until recently, I could never understand how one can derive enough pleasure to enjoy a decent corn-on-the-cob. The other thing that I could still recollect were the wide open expanse of space that the northerly route offers...the large rubber, oil palm and pineapple plantations...stretching into the horizon, and the kampung houses...who can forget them! Perhaps these are the views reminiscent of Singapore in her early days. Oh how I miss those sights, sound...and smell!

It has been a long while since..but I guess some memories are just there to stay.

A photo a week: Week 8

The circularity of the architecture of The Marina Barrage, Singapore, is aptly captured in this picture, with the 3-pillar-like feature of the Marina Bay Sands, clearly seen on the left side of the background. Taken in 2010, the green rooftop of the former, which is as large as four football fields, adds a depth of greenery, and I presume, lends some degree of credence to the main role of the building itself, which is widely seen as a symbol of Singapore's efforts in the areas of water recycling and water resources enhancement.

A photo a week: Week 7

Taken at the 'foot' of the Eiffel Tower, Paris, France during my vacation in 2008. It was truly mesmerizing to be at the base of one of the architectural marvels of the world. Up close, you can truly see the scale and enormity of the project being undertaken by those who built her in the 19th century...and considering that technology was not like what we have now, it was indeed a superlatively 'Herculean' effort...structurally beautiful and a sight to behold.

A photo a week: Week 6

Taken during the first day of the 2010 Chinese Lunar New Year, which also happens to coincide with Valentine's Day, this picture was inspired by the trails of ants that I saw as I immersed myself in the greenery that the Kent Ridge Park@Singapore has to offer. It helps that there weren't that many people around on that day. The weather was fantastic, and the surrounding that morning was so serene and soothing. The lush greenery in the midst of Singapore's urban jungle just adds on to the whole scheme of things.

A photo a week: Week 5

This picture was taken on a hot Saturday afternoon on the green rooftop of The Marina Barrage, Singapore. The blue skies on the hot afternoon day was a blessing for me, as the blue hues of the skies, and the greenery of the field just gave me an idea of how to compose the picture. Well, I thought of editing out the other 'distracting' features on the right, but I guess it was one of those things where I don't think I want to overdo the 'Photoshopping' too much.

A photo a week: Week 4

This picture, taken on a hot late weekday afternoon, just brings back memories of my high school, when everyone participated in the annual school cross-country. This spot was one of my favourite spots, to unwind and cool down, especially after the 5 km run. Looking at it when I was photographing this, it sure brings back some sweet, yet tiresome memories, of mornings, and afternoons, running in the green forested areas, feeling at peace and one with nature. Those were the memories of MacRitchie Reservoir.

A photo a week: Week 2

This photo was taken during my first outdoor lesson on photography in 2008. Taken with my first DSLR, an Olympus E-510, during a rather cloudy day at Clarke Quay, Singapore, it was a rather surprising one for me as I thought that this was initially just a bland shot. But with some minor colour adjustments, it made me realise that it  does look like the UN building in New York, in autumn. I guess sometimes the greatest of gems comes from those that doesn't seem to look like one in the first place.

A photo a week: Week 1

This was taken during my vacation to Melbourne and Sydney in June 2010, specifically at the Olympic Park jetty, Sydney, just outside the sporting facilities of the Sydney Olympics. The end of the city tour coincides very nicely with the magic hour. The sunset was perfect, the weather excellent! I just couldn't help but capture the jetty, in all its 'Magic Hour' glory.
